Yes, still no joy. I am not aware of any other Java aps that need/use sound, so I dont know if its a Java problem.
I do not have access to my computer att, so I cant double ck or toy with things right now. Will test more later.

Unfortunately, I at least don't really know what to suggest.  Seems
highly likely that this is somehow Kubuntu-specific since sound is
working well on other distros.

Does sound work from other Java applications on your machine, or do you
know?
