If you want a really really cheap easy to build antenna for hand held ground station use, consider the cheap yagi. For 432MHz it shouldn't cost more than $10. I've successfully used them with AMSAT OSCAR AO51 with a 2m and 440 yagi on the same boom. I've used varnished 1x2 pine for the boom and 1/8" welding rod for the elements.
