Last month there was a thread on this list regarding the home
construction of a TeleMega. I have recently gained access to some
slightly more advanced tools through a local Makerspace and I decided
that I'd be interested in giving this a go as well. However, I decided
that I would try my hand at an EasyMega first, so as to not have to deal
quite so much with the RF stuff on the first try. Also, I have use for one.

I am finding a problem, however with the HMC5883L 3-axis compass.
Digikey doesn't have any in stock and in contacting them today, they
tell me it is an obsolete part and won't be restocked. I've also found
that a few other vendors that I am familiar with don't have any either.
So I'm wondering what the thought is on this.

Is there a replacement that would work on the current board layout and
firmware? Do you know of a source that still has some of these parts? Or
do you have any other suggestions?

Now I do find a bunch of modules built for things like Arduinos and such
that have these chips on board. Perhaps the solution is to get one of
those and try to steal the chip. Some are even silly cheap on ebay...
