Whoops, my bad.  This time it worked (just got the notification), but
one of my cohorts had removed the gigantic 3.5 GB full backup file,
leaving only the old 500 MB incremental.  This worked fine, but now that
I have put the full backup back in its proper place, smbclient is once
again reporting a large negative integer for the file size.  Guess it's
a Samba problem.  I'm using the latest version, which is troublesome... 
Grrr....
