Thanks for the advice Paul and everyone! I plan to let the replaced tapes
sit through a complete tape cycle before reusing them. Like someone
mentioned, I don't want to sweat needing a backup until I'm sure the new
tapes have them all. The guy from whom I inherited the system had set up an
"archive" config, so I'll relabel the tapes for that when I'm ready to
reuse them.
