You'd probably have to look at the lights on the drive (if it has them).
Hardware compression is enabled either by device name or some specific
command (e.g. "chdev" on AIX or "mt" on Linux -- I think).  It may also
be auto-detected from whenever the tape was first written.  It's not
in the tapetype, and the glue script may or may not force the issue
(probably not).

However ...

That error would appear to be the real culprit, not compression.
