amandad dies sporadically

I'm running amanda on a RH 7.1 using xinetd, and doing backups with
smbclient, but every now and then, amandad dies, with the error:

 error receiving message: timeout
I'm also running it through an ip masq FW, using portfw to keep the ports
persistent and not use 60000<.
Amanda version 2.4.2p2 with advfs patch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
