  And as it turns out, I'm an idiot. I had put on the end of the chain a DDS2 
drive. Of course, this can't go on the chain since it runs a narrow scsi 
connection. So, the DDS2 terminator was only terminating half the pins on the 
chain. haha!  So, once I removed it, everything was better. I had thought 
this might be the problem, but I was hesitant because the backup failed the 
day before I had put on the new tape device as well.  But, lo and behold, it 
must have been purely a coincidence, because everything works okay now.
