It's clearly timing-related, then. Keep in mind that hte dtimeout is a timeout without *any* data, so I suspect that this is some kind of ugly interaction between ZFS busily doing copy-on-write to implement its snapshot while trying to feed data to the syscall-hungry gnutar.
