It's relatively new, so no, not yet, but if it proves to have lots of upsides and no significant downsides, then I'm sure it will become common. If this does end up solving your problem, perhaps you could add a "Troubleshooting" page to the wiki to help others? In general, Amanda's interactions with various tar implementations' quoting and unquoting mechanisms is unspecified and not always correct. It's something we'd like to address, but will probably not get to soon -- it's best solved with a completely new approach to indexing dumps.
