If all your DLEs are the same size, you won't need it because Amanda will even out the level 0 backups across the dump cycle, and then all the dumps will be of similar size. But that's a rare situation. More often there are one or two huge DLEs and the rest are small. Then you have to accommodate the occasional huge dump without wasting much space the rest of the time. Tape spanning lets you accommodate the huge DLEs by spreading them across multiple tapes.
