You configured xinetd for bsdtcp auth but amrecover use bsd.

Add:
auth "bsdtcp"
in /etc/amanda/amanda-client.conf
Which machine?
Try both and you will find.

The server, this machine, is a tarball build, with
everything in /usr/local/etc/amanda.
There is no /etc/amanda directory on any of my 3 machines being backed up
nightly.
You configured amanda differently, so you must adapt my answer to your setup.
Try /usr/loca/et/amanda/amanda-client.conf
