I have my changer divided into two separate configurations. My DAILY config uses slots 1-40. Tape drive 0. The ARCHIVE config uses slots 41-48. Tape drive 1. Never the twain shall meet.
Does that answer the question? Yes, amanda listens quite well, and refuses to obey if I tell it to mount a slot in the wrong set of numbers. To use a different slot (or drives 2 or 3) I would (currently) have to alter the configurations. Currently, the extra drives are there for when the first ones die. Of for manual use with DD and MT and MTX. I do my recovery using slots IN the correct range. I just pull out a tape that won’t be needed for a bit, and then put it back in when I’m done.
