The official Debian packages have indeed always used backup:backup, but
I believe the zmanda.com-supplied packages have matched the general
practice used there of using the "amandabackup" user.  See

Similarly, I believe the amanda-common package is part of the official
Debian build but not the zmanda.com build.  

(What were your four .deb packages?  .../packaging/deb/* in the install
tree seems to just build "amanda-backup-server" and
"amanda-backup-client".)
