Jens, I am using the included packages was trying to quickly POC Amanda for our env for a few file servers. I will build from source and see if I get anywhere. Thanks ! rob

I still have no idea what the reason for that problem is. I assume you are using the packages amanda-server and amanda-client from Ubuntu's repository. I remember there were several issues with them under Debian and Ubuntu in the past. Maybe it would help to build amanda from the source tarball?
