I've seen it very clearly mentionned when looking at sa-update
(install, man page?). In fact I came up with a script that would
--lint before and after the update and would not restart amavisd if
the lint was not successful.

> in /usr/local/etc/amavisd.conf

There is also:

$sa_debug = '1,all';

to turn SA debuging on (very verbose).

I am not sure if it is possible to run amavisd-new manually (not the
daemonized one) for testing purpose, I am too new to it (I was still
using amavisd until last week!).
