Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is an artist' facility based in Leith providing
studios, workshop space and equipment for a broad range of artists working
in sculpture and contemporary visual art.

As a membership organisation we are committed to providing opportunities for
the continued professional development of our 150 members including teaching
and exhibiting opportunities as well as administrative and technical
assistance.  We encourage debate and discussion and circulate a weekly email
newsletter detailing information on residencies, opportunities, members'
exhibitions and events.


Business Skills Programme

Dates:  20 July - 28 September
Times:  Tuesday Evenings 6pm - 8pm (unless otherwise stated)
Venue:  Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop
Price:  Free to ESW members, �20 for non-members  (This amount covers all 11
sessions)

The Business Skills Programme is the first section of the PDP.  In
partnership with other organisations and individuals we have devised an 11
week course covering various aspects of business skills tailored to artists'
requirements.

Sessions are informal in nature and cover a different topic each week.
There will also be plenty of opportunities for networking and discussion
about your own practice over a glass of wine.

Spaces on our Business Skills Programme are limited to 30 participants with
a set number reserved for ESW members.  Places are offered on a
first-come-first-served basis.

Introduction to Working as a Professional Artist

An introduction to working as a professional artist - examining your
preferred ways of working, basic approaches to planning your time, project
and finances, and setting appropriate fees and prices for your work
referring to the Scottish Artists Union's Rates of Pay.

Tax & Self Employment

Inland Revenue
Introduced by the Inland Revenue's Business Support Team, this session will
offer
practical advice on the tax matters that will affect you: record-keeping,
filling in and filing your tax return. Accessing further advice and
workshops will also be covered.

Legal Matters
Lorne Byatt
Morton Fraser Solicitors
An informal workshop covering intellectual property matters and contracts.
The basic concepts of copyright law will also be discussed together with
practical advice on how to protect your work against possible infringement.

Tuesday 10 August
Accountancy
Sheila Morrison
Phillip Hills Partnership
Offering a different perspective to the Inland Revenue presentation, Sheila
Morrison will give a short presentation on aspects of tax and bookkeeping
followed by a question and answer session.

Tuesday 17 August
Presenting your Portfolio of Work
Fiona Pilgrim
Cultural Enterprise Office
This session is aimed at artists who want to present their portfolio
effectively to potential clients, buyers, commissioners, agents, sponsors
and funders.  Appropriate handouts and 'signposts' to further sources of
information will support the session.

Artist Experiences
Juliana Capes & Portfolio Presentation
Following Fiona Pilgrims' workshop, this weeks' session will guide
participants through a practical example of an artists' portfolio.  ESW
member Juliana Capes will also give a talk on her experiences combining her
practice as an artist with making a living through education and outreach
work.

The Code
Susan Jones

The Artist Information Company
Susan Jones, Director of Programmes, will give a lively, user-friendly on
A-N's publication 'The Code of Practice for the Visual Arts'.  This booklet
is designed to provide practical advice on Professional Development and the
reality of working as an artist in Britain.

Contracts
Patricia Fleming
Freelance Curator
6pm - 9pm
Patricia Fleming will present a session on contracts for artists. Patricia,
Curator for Wales at the Venice Biennale was formally the Visual Arts
Programmer at CCA, Glasgow.

Creative Negotiation(TM)
Lynne O'Neil
La Bella Vita
6pm - 8.30pm

How to convince, collaborate and create your way to agreement. An
interactive workshop exploring the negotiation process and providing
practical tools and techniques for success. Issues covered include the
principals of negotiation, preparation, bargaining and closing.

Realising a Project/Commission
Juliet Dean
PACE
Director of PACE (Public Art Commissions and Exhibitions), Juliet Dean will
offer an insight into her experiences commissioning artists for large-scale
public art projects from receiving proposals to the end result.


11.
Tuesday 28 September
BOLT ON
Disclosure Scotland
Robert Pickles
Central Registered Body for Scotland
The CRBS was established to provide free police checks for those working in
the voluntary sector.  This General Awareness Session will offer an overview
of the implications of Disclosure Scotland for artists.

This class will be followed up with more advanced sessions as part of the
Education Skills section of the PDP.
