I am certainly no expert, but I can answer this question:

You need to build your Forth image and include the FORGET word.  Read the
doc (which is quite helpful) to see how you need to use FORGET (and how to
set markers).

When I built my first AMForth image for the Uno, I had exactly the same
trouble as you.  Consider it as "Freshman Hazing."
