I have run up against this.. if it ain't 32-bit in the first place, it won't work in Win7 64-bit.. older programs like my Uni_Trac interface software would simply not run on my new rootin scootin Win7 machine, and I ended up dedicating my old box strictly for running the Uni_Trac...

Something to consider for older programs is the compatibility mode in WIN7.
Right click on an icon, then Properties, and then Compatibility. There is a
drop-down box which will allow you to pick the version of Windows, and even
service pack, going back to WIN95.

I find that WIN7 works fine as-is for most programs, but I have a couple of
truly ancient non-ham utilities which were written for WIN98SE. They
worked, with limitations, on XP, but work fully again since I have WIN98
selected.

I have WIN7 32-bit, so I don't know if a 64-bit version offers any 32-bit
compatibility variations. Guessing not, but???

Wisp runs OK under Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Hi,
Two ways were mentioned to run old programs with windows 7:
1. Windows 7 Pro or highrer, working in its built-in "Windows XP mode"
2. Windows 7 Home (the cheaper version of Windows) with XP (or older
Windows version) installed.on a virtual machine.

Does anyone know if WISP will work in both cases? even if Windows 7 (either
Home or Pro) is installed in 64 bit version?

This solution seems cheaper than installing Windows 7 Pro.
Will it run WISP and other old programs as effectively as the "Windows XP
mode" in the more expensive Wi ndows 7 versions?

Note that you can also install XP in a virtual machine on lesser versions
of Win 7 (and Vista), but it's a multi-step process, and you must supply
the XP installation disk.

First, download and install Virtual PC from Microsoft. Then create a
virtual machine, and install XP onto it just as you would to a real PC.
I did it on my Acer netbook with Win 7 Home Premium, so I know it works.

You didn't mention what version of Win7. If Pro or up, you can download
a
free XP virtual environment from MS, which works well for old programs,
and
even allows ancient DOS programs to access comm ports.

For non-ham stuff, a good antivirus program, and a backup program such
as
Acronis, Norton, or perhaps Paragon.
