No, but I want to record the actual bytes transferred over the web link. That's why
I have separated the Internet traffic from the Cache. We will have about 200 schools
sharing the link and we need to be able to see how much bandwidth we'll need in the
next 6,12,18,24 months (never enough!!!). At present we only have a small number of
the schools using the system, and I'm surprised how low the actual usage has been
when compared to an existing group of business users over the past two years. We do
have proxies at each of our secondary schools acting as local cache for the closest
primary schools, and a single top level one at the centre.
I suspect that the school kids are not downloading large files, such as the latest
browser from Microsoft, or Y2k patches from Novell which some of my colleagues are
doing. Maybe I just have to get used to different usage patterns. Plus, I expect
that a lot of their accesses will be dealt with by local cache.
Maybe what I do need to change is the format for the cache only analysis to return,
as you say, the actual values sent back, rather than the smaller number of bytes
sent to check on the status of the original file.
Thanks.
