The web request sent by the browser includes the "referer", the page
that directed the browser to that particular URL. Adding the referer
to the log can substantially inclease the size of the log, so that
information is often not logged by default

It's technically possible to create a filter that will refuse requests with
"foreign" referers, and apply it to just your Image directory. I say technically
possible, but I've no idea how hard it is to do for Apache, or, if it's not
actually your server, whether your server provider would do it for you. A
slightly easier technique would involve using a CGI application to deliver your
images, which would involve updating any legitimate links to your images. You
definitely want to check your referer logs before embarking on this, and, if
there is a problem, you might try temporarily moving your images to another
folder, and replace the images that someone else is linking to with images of a
skull and cross bomes, stating that the site is displaying pirated images :-)
