On the other hand, any decent hacker would copy the images to their local
server and you'd never know but for the single request which is
indistinguishable from someone viewing them to buy them from you.

Why don't  you emboss a logo across them and call them "thumbnail comps" and
let people ordering them get the real ones from a secure/password connection
after the purchase? (See www.eyewire.com for example, or any tv station for
that matter)
