it clearly wasn't deliberate - there were referrers pointing to individual
pages of online editions of newspapers and magazines, and referrers
pointing to personal home pages. I'm fairly certain that the problem is
browsers sending incorrect referrer information, probably when a page is
loaded from a bookmark, or when there are multiple windows open, and you
get the referrer for the page in the other window.

(I'm also fairly certain that if it was a simple javascript trick, it
would be widespread enough to be common knowledge).
