[Jeremy is saying it's not possible to know the number of visitors] But Chuck was just looking for an _idea_ of the number of visitors ... and the number of unique hosts is about the most reasonable metric for that. Sure, you get some dupes (people dialing in twice) and some missing ones (people behind a proxy server), but it's as good as it gets.
And, IMHO, in spite of all its warts, the number of unique hosts is still a useful number.
