Creating a DNSCACHE wouldn't help if you don't at least turn on DNS LOOKUP.
Cache hits seem to be pretty good on performance, but LOOKUP will kill your performance, if your web site is a public one. But it could be a good idea for intranets. Another approach I can think of, if you have large log files of a web server with users from mixed sources (Internet/Intranet) might be to run multiple instances of analog, use HOSTEXCLUDE on each instance to complementarily analyze only the relevant entries (i.e., analog A excludes B users, and analog B excludes A users), and use your HOSTALIAS entries on analog B instance only. That'll cut down on the performance hit for both instances. You can report on them separately, or better yet, find a way to remerge the output before reporting (for example, use OUTPUT COMPUTER, remerge the output files, and use ReportMagic). Hope that helps. Sorry I can't be of help on your specific performance issue. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Dolling, Adrian CAWS:EX Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 2:30 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [analog-help] HOSTALIAS and performance DNS lookups are turned off. I had contemplated hand creation of the DNSCACHE file. Would using the dns lookup instead of hostalias improve performance? Not sure if that'll improve your performance, but thought that could be another way to go if it doesn't affect other performance considerations. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Dolling, Adrian CAWS:EX Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 1:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [analog-help] HOSTALIAS and performance I routinely run several analog reports. I recently modified the configuration files to include a much larger number (~4000, instead of ~200) of HOSTALIAS commands. After this, it seems that analog performance has degraded by a factor of 20. Can anyone provide any insight? Background details: Our logfiles have IP addresses in. The HOSTALIAS commands are like: HOSTALIAS 122.232.*.* HOSTA HOSTALIAS 122.36.240.83 HOSTB HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.128 HOSTC HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.129 HOSTC HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.130 HOSTC HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.131 HOSTC HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.132 HOSTC HOSTALIAS 122.34.170.133 HOSTC etc... (ip and hostnames changed, but note that there are consecutive number ranges for a set of ip addresses to map to a single host alias).
