TDIMon ( http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/tdimon.shtml ) shows Analog sending the DNS request to the Transport Driver Interface. When the rDNS fails ~ and ONLY when it fails ~ then "System" sends the nbname request to the Transport Driver Interface. The system function isn't called unless the rDNS return is negative.
