A lot of us have been through all this once before with J2ME. Take a look at
Terrence's blog. It provides a good overview of the current industry:

Waiting for devices to launch before starting to think about content
delivery pushes the small developer out of the picture. Carriers launch, big
players set up provisioning, content aggregators become the gatekeepers. In
these early stages, we have a chance to organize ourselves. Waiting until
the launch of devices to start thinking about it is equivalent to giving up.
If we (by we I mean all of us) don't have a large, organized community with
content to deliver, what do you think the chances are a carrier is going to
allow any non-approved application the "rights" to install other
applications? If not zero, then its close to zero.

I'm not in this for shits and giggles to form some community. Frankly, I
have a lot of communities I'm involved with and adding another one just
means I don''t get to sleep as much. I had been in the mobile content and
delivery space for five years and it wasn't fun or innovative any more.
Android sparked something in me personally. I'm in this now because we
missed this opportunity with J2ME and that's why I'm pushing for community
involvement in SlideME, that's why I'm trying to clarify why we aren't
about searching of content, that there is something beyond that. If you want
to see your future if we fail in this, just look back:
