I can understand his reluctance to face a lawsuit, but I cannot believe that patent could stand a court challenge. The feature is too obvious: the only way they could have met the requirement for non- obviousness would be if they had a particular WAY to display it, and that was was novel and non-obvious. But then all the developer you mentioned has to do is show that his way is different enough.
