A simpler approach, since I can see the outbound message in wireshark, might be to do an HTTP request to the same URL. It will fail, of course, but at least I will see an unencrypted version of the message I'm sending. There's a lot going on in that HTTPS key exchange, though, and some of that stuff might be failing. It's annoying that the HttpClient fails without either an exception message or anything in logcat. Is there an example somewhere of known working code that uses the HttpClient with HTTPS?
