I used something "unandroidy" that seemed to strike a positive cord
with my users.

In the menu button, I put an "End App" option. All it does is call
"finish()" - the same as pressing the back key. I had so many
complaints that there was no way to end the app that I added this
option. Since then, I haven't had any complaints. I've even had some
positive feedback in the comments about "the only app having a way to
end it."

I'm guessing that a large percentage of users don't know how to use
the Android device as it was intended. Perhaps the carriers should
force all new buyers to sit in front of an instructional 10 minute
video before handing over this complex and intricate device. That
might make things easier for all. Even seasoned users are going to be
finding new things that should be obvious. I've been carrying around
an Android device for over 18 months and just recently found out that
a long press on the menu button brings up a list of "recent" apps.
While cool, that wasn't obvious. I never saw that 10 minute
instructional video either...
