OK, I'm curious.

I've seen two things jump out at me about this topic

1. The active install percentage is wrong, sometimes really really
wrong.
2. Developers are really really really really concerned about it. Many
are insisting that the Market put back the percentages they rightfully
deserve.

There seems to be an assumption that active install count is being
held against you. That's possible, but what evidence is there? But
evidence, I don't mean proof, because we won't get proof. Does it
affect rankings? And by rankings do you mean order in keyword search
or order in category?

I haven't really stressed over active install count. Should I start?
My free app has 30%. I'm surprised it's that high because the app
expires after 16 days. Maybe people just leave it installed. My paid
app has 61%. I'm surprised that it's that low, since people already
paid for it. My free app is somewhere around 368 in the free section.
I have no idea if that is because of install percentage.

If install percentage is the all powerful most important metric, then
I need to change my strategy about a time limited demo. But without
more evidence, I will stick to the old fashioned idea of makign my
product better.
