Many people noticed a rank drop when the active installs plummeted. I know I
went from #2 on my Nexus to hovering around #4-#6 in my paid category. Still
at #1 on G1 last I checked though. That's not proof though - it's not a huge
drop and who knows what other factors are involved.

Not only are the stats completely unreliable, but don't forget that there
are a LOT of users that can barely work their phones. They may have figured
out how to download your app, but they may have not gotten around to
figuring out how to uninstall. Also, given the number of "my kid bought your
app accidentally, I need a refund" emails I've received, don't discount
accidental installs that people aren't even aware of.

A better measure would be comparing Google Checkout against your own
analytics.

I don't think anyone does. Google's secret sauce for determining rankings is
not exactly public.
