Yes, I've seen fluctuations here, but also don't know all the factors.
I think that recent downloads make a difference, but how much weight
is given to total installs vs last week installs vs yesterday's
installs is what we'll probably never know.

That would describe some of my users for sure.

This is one data point. When I had exactly 1000 downloads, I was just
above many apps that said 500-1000 and just below many apps that said
1000-5000. At that point, it seemed that total installs was the only
thing determining ranking. But as one gets closer to the top

This is what I can do to help the community. I'll report back next
month on how many installs I get from keyword search vs category
browse vs related apps. This will only reflect my own apps but it
should tell people something.
