I was under the assumption that developers were expected to use pure XML to design layouts, and then use the GUI to test and see how it looks (though honestly it still doesn't match what actually happens on the screen). Try using a different GUI editor (droiddraw I believe is one) or just using xml (probably going to be more helpful in the long run anyway).
