But if you sign the apk with the same key that has been used to upload the app on Market the user should be able to update the app without uninstalling it. (at least I tried that with my own apps and it worked fine..) Usually I send the apk by email, and tell the user to use a file manager to install it. Then if he doesn't have 'Unkown sources' checked he will just get a warning when trying to install and if I remember correctly there should be also a popup with instructions on how/where to enable it.
