And there are numerous examples of people complaining that Google is not giving them as much as they deserve besides anything to do with Market. In fact there were two nice (and common) ones just the other day at the fireside chat: - Someone asking about when Google is going to completely open-source Android, and then clarifying open-sourcing everything down to the hardware drivers and radio layer. When it was pointed out that these are not things Google has direct control over because they are owned by other people, but if you look at the progress over the last few years there have been a lot of improvements in the situation and Google will continue to work to make things better, the response is "well I'm disappointed." Nice. - Someone asking for Google to open-source their proprietary apps so others can learn from "real full working apps." This person was not too happy about the response of that not happening... at which point I would have liked to ask what full working apps *that* person had open-sourced for others. Not to mention that there are plenty of full working apps in the open-source platform (contacts, music, calendar, etc) that Google did implement and give away. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with asking for such things and bringing them up. What annoys me is the attitude that often goes along with it when these requests and demands are not fully met that Google is somehow not doing enough. > 2 - Google takes a $25 signup fee and 30% cut of every paid app sold > through the Android Market. On the other hand -- just compare this with other platforms: on iOS and Windows Mobile you get the same 30% cut but have to pay $99 a year for the privilege of distributing any apps. On Windows MSDN is about $800/year. A single $25 signup fee is trivial. And if you don't want to pay it, we made Android so that you could still publish your apps outside of Market. Anyway I did say that I don't read threads about Market, and I don't want to get into another one here. -- Dianne Hackborn Android framework engineer hack...@android.com Note: please don't send private questions to me, as I don't have time to provide private support, and so won't reply to such e-mails.
