At the very least I will give you my findings when I get around to
writing it. I just did a release today and people get annoyed with to
many releases. So it will likely be next week.

It's not a problem that has been around since the first release. I'm
starting to think it's been around since I added support to install to SD
card. Hmmm, I should see if I can log whether the game is installed on an
SD card.
That would be useful to know, though I'm not sure there's a way to
tell that at runtime. sourceDir on ApplicationInfo, perhaps.
I would bet that the initial install does a verification but the launcher
likely doesn't do it every time. So if the card is flaky it could still
install and fail later.
Agreed.
You think this is overkill? I have a game engine so it could be done once
in my tools.
It's only overkill if it doesn't help.
I'm going to be in a similar situation in a few months (I hope),
distributing APKs with large assets that should allow install-to-SD
for older devices. If you decide to go down the checksum path, drop me
a line off-list, and perhaps we can collaborate on an open source
solution, if you're up for that.
