You can query the maximum size using Canvas.getMaximumBitmapWidth/Height(): http://developer.android.com/reference/android/graphics/Canvas.html#getMaximumBitmapWidth()
You can also assume 2048px as the maximum unless the screen is bigger (Nexus 10 for instance supports 4096px max since the screen is bigger than 2048px.)
