It's a bit of a hassle, but instead of using promo/coupon codes you ask the
target group you want to "comp" your app to forward their play store
receopt to you, then you look up the order and refund it.  Not practical
with a group of any size but you could do it if you aren't looking to give
out a whole pile of promo copies.  Only other thing I can think of is to
put a second copy of the app in the play store using a different package
name and make it free but limit access to it by unpublishing it when the
promotion is over, or use the beta/alpha APK feature to limit distribution
that way.
