App: Gallery Map Category: Media Developer: Just me Website: None yet My idea seems pretty small in comparison to most I'm reading about here, but it's an idea I've had since I first got my G1, and after learning there was a competition with real prizes, and that putting apps up on the market was so easy, I decided to begin working on it several months ago. Some nights and weekends were sacrificed to get it working, and there was a lot of learning to do, but in the end I'm pretty happy with what I made. I used a ton of online resources to find how to do different small tasks, hopefully I'll be able to help contribute to these same places as I continue developing.
The basic idea behind my app is to show you all your pictures on a map, since most of them have geotags in them. I wanted to be able to see all the pictures I had taken in a given area, when I took them, and view the pictures full screen. The end goal was to provide a full replacement for the built-in Gallery application, but due to some outstanding bugs, I decided to cut back the features a bit. I'd rather release a solid app that did a little well than release an app that did a lot of stuff poorly. I've already thought of several enhancements to the app, and I'll probably begin working on those in the coming weeks while the competition is going on. Hopefully by the time it's over, I'll have a decent app to release for free in the market. I'm considering a paid application with advanced features, but first I need to gauge whether there is any demand for my app at all. As far as the contest itself goes, I was only disappointed in the lack of communication from the official site, since it said "Submissions will open sometime in August" for months, only changing the last week of August when they actually opened. I'm glad I kept checking daily, since I didn't want to miss the August 31st deadline. The inability to update your submission after August 31st doesn't bother me, I was stress testing my app for weeks before the deadline, and was fixing things right up until the day before submissions closed.
