The Motorola site claims a different resolution: >3.7"; WVGA (480 x 854 pixels); 16:9 widescreen http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Mobile-Phones/ci.Motorola-DROID-US-EN.alt If you don't have the android:targetSdkVersion attribute in your manifest set high enough, or it is missing and you don't have the android:minSdkVersion attribute set high enough, then sometimes the system reports a lower resolution than native for compatibility purposes. Maybe that's why you are seeing the lower resolution in your tests?
