Steve, I am also in need of a p2p framework. I am a little surprised by lack of any development effort in this area. Please, let me know if you would like to collaborate in researching and maybe implementation of a basic p2p framework. Splitting work will get us there faster. If there is anybody else how wants to participate please let me know. It is not a product or a project, just an informal collaboration.
Also, if there is anybody at google monitoring this forum, who has any pertinent information as to the status of the p2p infrastructure, please let us know if such development exists.
