I'm going down the route of unlocking the G1 so I can use my normal SIM
which I get decent 2G & 3G coverage from.

As for mass adoption, I think the problem is not simply cost. The
T-Mobile shop I visited is in a town of 75,000 people and is the
commercial hub for a number of surrounding towns and villages. It has a
number of web design agencies based there as well as "Internet
consultancies" and a couple of small ISPs. The next nearest T-Mobile
shop is 8 miles away and when I visited them at around mid-day today
(launch day here) I was the second person who had shown an interest in
buying a G1. Talking to the in-store staff the main issues seemed to be
lack of headphone socket, poor camera, and form-factor.

The impression I got was that it looked too "Businessy" for the people
after a personal 'phone, yet it's not got the Business functionality
that corporates want (Exchange intgration, no PDF reader, etc.).

I guess it may just be a geek-phone :).

Al.

P.S. I still laugh when I see that T-Mobile UK offer the user guide from
their website as a PDF and, of course, you can't read it on a G1.
