Android and G1 are brand new and I don't see them as much more than a (solid) proof-of-concept. Android "1.5" running on 10 devices or more including *unlocked* dittos will make the true difference.
Anyway, Android seems like a much better deal than symbianfoundation, at least of you can afford a 3-year perspective. I would gladly buy a G1 but in Europe, unlocked phones are much more common and Android isn't there yet.
