Yeah, the distinction is not trivial; it's crucial. Android, as developed by Google, is completely free and open. The G1 that HTC and T-Mobile collaborated on may not be, but the next Android device (for example, by OpenMoko or Asus) may be. Get mad at HTC or T-Mobile, not Google. And please, recognize the G1 for the *enormous* stepping stone that it is for developers and users, over any other phone out there, including the iPhone.
