One possible good candidate to try Android on is the OpenMoko phone called FreeRunner: http://openmoko.com/ G1 is to FreeRunner as Android is to OpenMoko. It will take some work, no doubt, but the FreeRunner hardware is completely Open. The G1 does have some nicer features, but the Freerunner is a very nice phone.
