I agree.  I had the same problem when I wasn't driving and had use of
both hands (in response to Peli).  I called into an automated response
system that requires you to push numbers for choices.  Needless to
say, I failed to navigate through the system due to having to turn the
screen on and bring back up the dial pad.

I like the way the iPhone works in regards to this.  It uses the
accelorometer to determine whether you have the phone to your ear and
shuts the screen off, then when you lower the phone to look at the
screen, it turns the screen back on, automatically.

One more note:  The dial pad SHOULD NOT automatically lower itself,
EVER.
