Gmail notifications were not showing on my G1, either but I fixed it by going to my Gmail forwarding section and disabling forwarding. I had been automatically forwarding all gmail to the Entourage client on my MacBook Pro.
By the way, I don't think the Gmail client is all that bad and the automatic notifications are terrific. My daughter has the new Samsung and just learned that she has to enter a full email address every time before she sends an email. Count your blessings.
