Sorry, you're wrong.

The only people I know who are aware of what root means in a computing 
context only know about it because of their day jobs, any very few of 
them actually want to use a "terminal window". Yes consumers want more 
functionality, but they want it with an intuitive GUI, and many won't 
even try anything on a phone that requires typing a command. This isn't 
limited to 'phones, when was the last five times you think a non-techie 
relative of yours opened up a command prompt on their copy of Windows?

For people wishing to do mash-ups, etc. there is the SDK which can 
create deployable apps, but as for *consumer* 'phones like the G1 the 
focus is far more on ease of use than allowing people to mess around 
with it, and to me that is correct.

If you want a 'phone that you can hack to your hearts content you should 
look for a developers phone like the Dev Phone 1, you shouldn't be 
looking at a consumer targeted phone like the G1.
