My opinion: 1) Firstly, IPhone is visually more enticing than Android. Everything on the IPhone just *looks better,* mainly because the main/core buttons, menus, and etc are better looking. I hope Android can improve upon this with better animations and etc. 2) Secondly, I have always hated the idea of the "menu button." I would so prefer it the IPhone way of just having the buttons on the bottom of the screen so another click is not needed. 3) Thirdly, android really lacks navigation controls. I thought the back button design wasn't smart. Right now the back button can do so many different things from one application to another; you aren't even sure where it will take you. Sometimes, it will exit the application, sometimes it will take you back to the previous screen, and etc. IPhone's navigational controls at the top (with words) makes it very easy to know and specify which screen it will go to.
Android does beat Apple in terms of being stable (to a certain extent). As noted by the original poster, garbage collection makes it easier to program applications that do not crash as often. Many IPhones applications are poorly written and crash often.
